Testimonials

Under Joy’s guidance the course I took with her was way, way beyond my expectations, in terms of what I learnt, how much I enjoyed the group process she stimulated, what I managed to produce and not least how much I incredibly enjoyed writing.  Joy’s feedback and encouragement created a wonderful and safe environment to learn and experiment.  I’ve been inspired to make writing a greater part of my life.

Joy was always very proactive in her approach and gave some great advice to help us improve our writing. She gave a lot of positive feedback as well as pointing out small things that can be improved. Overall, I think she has a knack for teaching and made everyone feel very comfortable in class.

If writing a story is like running a marathon, Joy’s insights are like the cups of Gatorade handed out at refreshment stops. You chug a bunch, feel wobbly at first, but once they settle, you feel revitalized. Well, until everything starts hurting again. But you’re doing it—and Joy’s feedback, like the Gatorade, helps you cross that finish line.

Joy was open, ecouraged discussion, made our class flow. The critiques were always encouraging and precise. She also was a good listener and incorporated our own critiques into hers.
Gaia T.

Joy’s ability to ask clarifying questions and tailor her critiques to my goals is her best quality! It leaves me feeling more positive about my piece and clear on what to focus on for revisions.

I met Joy at the International Writers Collective, as she taught my level 1 course. She facilitated the course with passion and professionalism, teaching us narrative and critiquing techniques as well as figures of speech to enrich our texts. She has also been immensely helpful teaching me privately on submitting written works for publishing. Her experience in writing, acute understanding of the writing world and personalized approach have been very valuable for me. Joy is reliable, hardworking, creative and generous, I highly recommend working with her!

It’s hard to identify specifics with Joys approach because it was so natural, we all opened up fairly quickly and got comfortable with sharing. She gave us a lot of space and that encouraged us to give more detailed feedback. Asking us to give specifics examples from others pieces to back up our feedback. Reminding us to separate narrator from the writer. The way she would read snippets of our pieces to show recognition of all the devices we used was very validating.
